But this is what I’m finding, in glimpses and flashes: this is it. This is it, in the best possible way.
That thing I’m waiting for, for that adventure, that movie-score-worthy experience unfolding
gracefully. This is it. Normal, daily life ticking by on our streets and sidewalks, in our houses and
apartments, in our beds and at our dinner tables, in our dreams and prayers and fights and
secrets - this pedestrian life is the most precious thing any of us will ever experience.

Not Rachael Ray

(A true story)

We had the missionaries here
for dinner just tonight.
Entertaining’s not my cup of tea,
but that’s alright—
I do my best to just say Yes
when called upon to serve.
“Weaknesses to Strengths” we’re told,
so I got all my nerve…
I made spareribs, and oh,
they looked right pretty in the pot.
We passed ‘em round, and – oh no!- found
that tasty they were not.
I’ve made that dish before, but this time
something has gone wrong.
There’s plenty o’ rib and plenty o’ sauce
but all the meat is gone!
I don’t know how that happened.
I watched those good men eat;
They took a bite, and froze, and then
pulled hard things from their teeth.
So thus we ate.  Before they left,
the elders said a prayer,
gave thanks for hospitality
and kindness shown them there.
My son and I still sat there
when my husband took them home.
“Guess what?” I said, half-laughing—
“I just fed the elders bones.”
